The Man Refused to Give Up His Seat for a Mother and Child—Should He Be Held Accountable?

Im travelling by bus with my son after a day at the shopping centre. Beside us, theres a woman with a child about the same age as my son.

The bus is packed. I spot a young man listening to music through his headphones and politely ask him if he wouldnt mind giving up his seat. He stands up at once and my son and I take his place. My son offers him a sweet as a thank you. The young man seems a bit bashful but he smiles warmly.

A little later, I notice the other mother trying to do something similar. She starts tugging at the shoulder of a man whos dozing in his seat. He doesnt wake up right away, so she begins to shout. He pulls out his headphones, stunned and annoyed, obviously having no clue whats happening.

Cant you see Ive got a young child with me? Give us your seat! she yells so loud her own little one starts to cry from the fright. I dont want to move! insists the man, standing his ground.

Honestly, I completely see his point. He didnt owe her anything. There was no reason for him to be shouted at and embarrassed like that. I quietly suggest that maybe her son could sit next to mine, but shes far more interested in causing a scene.

For the record, thats simply not how I handle these things. If I need to ask, I do so politely. If someone gives up their seat for a child, Im genuinely grateful. If not, I understandits their decision. In all these years, Ive never once been turned down.

Its likely because I never resort to shouting or yelling at strangers.
