For ten long years, I looked after my husbands grandfather. We all squeezed into a rented flatme, our children, and my husbandwhile his sister, Catherine, lived in the old mans council flat. No one else in the family wanted to bother with him. Not his daughter, not the grandchildren. My life felt like a slow grindnever finished university after falling pregnant, never built a career or any real sense of accomplishment.
Every day blurred into the next, juggling Grandads care with looking after the kids.
My husband hated the constant strain at home. Hed often disappear on drinking binges, desperate for an escape. Other women werent lining up for a man with no house and a handful of kids, so sooner or later hed come dragging back to me. I forgave him, though any love had long since faded. I did it for the kids and for Grandad, as he still put a bit of money our way. Catherine barely ever came round, except to pester the old man for his pension or moan about money problemsthough truth be told, she and her lot werent hard done by. With no rent to pay, they could afford holidays abroad.
Five years ago, Grandad called me over and pressed an envelope into my hands. Youve done more for me than my own family ever did. My grandsons a wet blankethed just hand this flat back to his mum or sister. Let your childrenmy great-grandchildrenlive here. Think of it as a thank you for everything youve done, and so you wont regret wasting your best years.
He left me the flat, but no one else in the family knew. When his health began to fail, suddenly his daughter and Catherine started to show up, feigning concern now that they sensed the end was near. But Grandad saw right through them.
After the funeral, the family set about dividing what was left. My mother-in-law and Catherine pressured my husband to give up any claim on the flat since Catherine was already living there. He didnt put up a fight, clueless about the will.
The very next day, my husband started packing his bags. He told me hed found someone else, and that hed only ever stayed because I was looking after his grandfather. He left, and honestly, it felt like a boulder had been lifted from my chest. When the family discovered the will, the gloves came off and the threats started flying.
Youll never get that flatnever! We dont know what you did to twist the old mans arm, but well drag you into court and show everyone the truth. You can leave my son alone, by the wayhes got a lovely new woman at last.
That was the moment I realised: I had the power now to tell them all exactly where to go. And I did: I think its time you all left me in peace and got on with your own lives.
Their bile didnt sting. Now, for the first time, Im working, the children and I have a home of our own, and what matters mostIm finally free of that wretched family.
What would you do if you were in my shoes?
