The pensioner told me she hadnt seen her son in over six years.
How long has it been since your son last spoke to you? I asked my neighbour, and, in that moment, my heart broke.
Its been six years since I last saw him, she said quietly. After he and his wife moved away, he used to ring me now and then, but after a while, he just stopped. There was one birthday when I bought him a cake and went to visit. Here, she lowered her gaze and tears welled in her eyes.
And what happened then?
My daughter-in-law answered the door and told me I wasnt welcome in their home. My son stood behind her, said nothing at all, just looked at me as though I was to blame for something, and then turned away. That was the last time I saw him.
He never phoned you again after that? I couldnt believe what she was telling me.
I only spoke to him once more, when I decided to sell my three-bedroom flat and move into a smaller place. Of course, I gave him some money from the sale. He came round, signed the papers, took the money, and I never heard from him again.
Do you feel very lonely, or have you come to terms with being on your own? I asked the old lady.
I manage, she replied. I was left to raise my son alone after my husband walked out on me for another woman. My son grew up surrounded by love and care. When he told me he wanted to rent his own flat, I was pleased at firstI thought he was ready for adulthood, thinking about settling down.
But there was more to it than that. It was really his girlfriend pushing for them to have their own place, so no one would get in the way of their fun. Not long after, she fell pregnant.
You tell me all this so calmly. Doesnt it upset you, being left by your son now youre older? I was taken aback.
Ive got used to it. I like my new home, and Ive got enough money for everything I need. Every morning, I get up, put the kettle on, and step out onto the balcony with a cup of tea. I like to watch the city waking up. When I was younger, all I ever dreamed of was sleeping inI had to work double shifts to make ends meet. I used to dream of getting old, surrounded by people I love but I suppose it wasnt meant to be.
Why not get yourself a pet? I said. Its always nicer to have some company.
Ah, my dear, even cats have a way of leaving their owners, and I couldnt have a dogI might not even wake up the next morning. I couldnt take care of someone I cant protect. Ive made that mistake before. Once is enough.
She tried to compose herself, but the pain was too much, and finally gave way to tears.
Childrennever abandon your parents. Youre a part of them, and when theyre gone, a part of you leaves with them.
