The Ruthless Divorce: The Tale of Oxana and Archibald

Harsh divorce: the story of Emma and James

Its unbearable to realise that love has suddenly turned into a cold divorce, with no explanations, shattering every illusion of security at home.

Where have you been? Emma asks as James finally walks through the front door after three weeks away.

Its fine, he answers calmly. Im exhausted, like a dog. Those trips have worn me out completely.

Cant you just say no? Emma murmurs, staring out the window.

Thats the problem, James sighs. Besides you, nobodys waiting for me, and I dont want to let my colleagues down.

You understand everything, love, Emma says softly.

Not everything, but a lot, she adds.

Emma already knows James didnt go on a work trip. Shes certain where he spent his time and with whom. Why does she stay so calm? There are solid reasons.

The next day, after James leaves again, Emma finds his passport under the sofa. How could he travel without it? she wonders. She calls him.

Are you okay? she asks.

Fine, he replies.

Where are you now?

On a train, James says.

After a few more words, Emma hangs up and thinks, If he has no passport, either he has another one or hes lying. So there was no trip. He must be with another woman right now, and tomorrow hell show up at work as if nothing happened. Ill see it then.

At eight to ten in the morning, Emma waits by the entrance of Jamess office building. She watches him walk in. No other woman? she wonders. Stay sharp. I need to know where he goes after work so I can find her and talk. When the workday ends, she follows him.

The truth turns out to be easier to uncover than expected a chatty resident on the fourth floor spills the beans. Sarah Bennett, 35, single, bought her flat two years ago, and shes been seeing James for six months. Emma now has a flood of questions, but her inner voice warns her to tread carefully.

Emma! a sudden inner voice rings out. Now isnt the time for a fight.

Why not? she retorts.

Because youre shaking, breathing fast, and full of hatred. Have you even looked at yourself in the mirror? How will you start that conversation looking like this? The voice continues, If you start a scene, theyll both look at you with pity, then laugh after youre gone, glad youre out of the picture. Is that what you want?

The inner voice steadies Emma. Ill divorce him without explanations quietly, indifferently, and in a way that hurts him, she decides, feeling a surge of resolve.

She maps out a plan:

Ill say were divorcing, thats all.
Hell keep asking why.
Ill calmly reply theres no reason.
The divorce is simply because I chose it.
Then Ill be aloof, make a quiet mockery, and be blunt.

The voice approves, adding, Do it quietly, brazenly, and calmly it will strike at his ego hardest.

Bolstered, Emma pretends to believe Jamess stories about work and trips for the first few days, giving him the illusion that their old love still matters.

Her first words on his return are sympathetic. The next morning, when James comes home from work, the performance begins. He feels confident and happy, unaware that everything is about to change.

In the evening, he steps through the doorway and calls out, Darling, where are you? Your bunnys back! Come on in! Emma sits at the kitchen table, sipping tea and eating a cake straight from the box, indifferent.

Its too late, she thinks, feeling the shift.

James complains about work endless tasks, constant trips without rest. Emma answers shortly and coldly, I dont care. He falls silent, stunned by her reaction. She drinks her tea loudly, munches the cake with a spoon, not even cutting it a behaviour James cant understand.

Then, coldly, she says, Were getting a divorce.

She fixes her gaze on him, trying to make it as provocative as possible, and adds, Got it? Divorce, plain and simple. No reason. Thats it.

James is shocked. Her refusal to explain infuriates him. He tries to put her in her place, but all he gets back is a quiet, Bugger off. Emma gets up, moves to another room, and declares she wont eat any more cake or explain anything to anyone.

The relationship collapses completely coldness and indifference reach their peak. James tries to stay calm, but irritation builds inside him.

Whats happening? he wonders, staring at the halfeaten cake. Did she find out about Sarah? That would have caused a scene, but there isnt one. So something else is going on

He attempts to start a conversation. Emma, lets talk this through.

Leave me be, Im resting, she snaps.

James feels shes mocking him. Do you even know what a divorce is? Its divorce! Understand?

He cant grasp why his questions remain unanswered and why the house feels so icy. Suddenly the doorbell rings their daughters, Lucy and Mia, arrive.

James greets them happily, only to be met with the same cold indifference Emma showed. The girls side with their mother, ready to punish their father.

Mum wants a divorce and wont give reasons.
Why look for reasons when women just split these days?
You need to go. This flat belongs to Mum now, and youre better off staying with Grandma in the village.

James tries to make sense of it, but he isnt prepared for such an attack. The women are united: the divorce is final, and theres no room left for former love.

Sarah Bennett is the trigger for the split. Emmas icy response is her retaliation for infidelity. The daughters back their mother, echoing her stance. James ends up alone, having lost everything.

In the end, Emma tells James to pack his things and leave, stressing that the decision is final and uncompromising. He never fully understands what pushed them over the edge.

The whole episode is filled with bitterness and mutual misunderstanding, but it was the cold indifference and silent boycott that inflicted the deepest pain on the betrayer, without resorting to loud fights or scandals.

The key observation: sometimes the most painful punishment is a wordless estrangement and a detached divorce without explanations, when words lose meaning and every hope drifts away. This story shows how love can swiftly turn into cold alienation, and how each persons rights and feelings become subject to harsh tests and change.
