The Secret Gift: A Tale of One Destiny

Anthony’s Hidden Gift: A Tale of Fate

Anthony woke to the sound of a frying pan sizzling in the kitchen, the kettle boiling, and the air thick with the smell of fried potatoes. His father, Peter, as usual in the pre-dawn quiet, was preparing for a fishing trip. His old motorbike, creaking and groaning, waited outside, while Peter bustled about, packing sandwiches, a thermos, and checking his gear. He tried not to make noise, but he still woke his wife. Marina had felt unwell since the evening but thought rest would help. Peter, cheerful at the prospect of a morning by the lake, had no idea the day would bring not relaxation, but a true shock.

Once the motorbike rumbled away, Marina tried to sleep, but she suddenly felt worse. A sharp pain gripped her stomach, and her head spun. She gasped, “Tony! Call an ambulance, love!”

Anthony, still half-asleep, rushed out and found his mother pale and weak. He dashed to the phone, but the ambulance took too long. He gave her water, tucked her in, and a growing helplessness gnawed at him. Then, unsure what else to do, he hugged her tightly—and suddenly felt her weakness flow into him. A minute later, Marina sat up, her lips regaining color. “Son, it’s like magic… as if I was never ill.”

Anthony stepped back, breathing heavily. His mind raced—it had happened again. Again, he’d “pulled” someone’s pain onto himself. This strange gift had been with him since childhood. It felt as if someone old and wise lived inside him, allowing him to heal—but at the cost of his own strength.

Meanwhile, Peter ran into trouble. His motorbike stalled on a forest bend, and only luck spared him from being hit by a speeding jeep. The driver, a man in an expensive jacket, leaped out, panicked, and waved his hands. “You alright, mate? Blimey, I’m sorry! Look, don’t call anyone—here, take this, buy yourself a new bike!” He shoved two thick wads of cash into Peter’s hands, jumped back into the jeep, and sped off.

Peter had to tow the motorbike home. At dusk, he arrived, where Marina stood on the porch, tears in her eyes. “Peter, where were you? I nearly died today, and you—where’s your fish, then?”

Pale and shaken, Peter clenched the money. “This… this is for my life, love. Today could’ve been the end.”

Soon, a used but sturdy car appeared in their driveway. Peter beamed like a child. “Well, now we’ve got wheels for life!”

Anthony, however, was recovering. His mother grumbled, “No help from anyone—one’s always fishing, the other lying about! You ought to settle down, not mope around!”

But Anthony soon perked up. He landed a job finishing a kitchen installation in a new home—and there, he met Eleanor. She stood silently, watching him work. Not a word passed between them, but her gaze held quiet warmth.

The next day, he returned—claiming he needed to attach more handles. Eleanor offered tea. Scones, quiet, smiles. Then, out of nowhere, Anthony said, “What if we went out sometime? To the cinema. I’d introduce you to my parents, you’d introduce me to yours. And then… maybe a wedding?”

Without hesitation, Eleanor replied, “I’d like that.”

And so their story began. The families were thrilled; Eleanor charmed everyone. Anthony was promoted to foreman, the work thrived, and soon, they learned—a baby was coming.

Sometimes, he remembered his grandmother’s words: “Some folks haven’t the strength to live. They just sit, aimless. People like you, Tony, must stand by them—but don’t forget to care for yourself, too.”

And he tried. He never showed how draining his “gifts” were. He stayed silent when called odd. And in his heart, he admitted—if this was his purpose, so be it. The important thing was, he wasn’t alone anymore.

Some burdens are lighter when shared.
