Shadow of Another Father
My name is Lucy, Im thirty-five. My life has always been so propera cosy flat, a secure job, a dependable husband called Tom, and our son Harry, whos just turned sixteen. But all that neat order came crashing down one evening.
Harry was rummaging about in the loft looking for an old games console, and instead he stumbled upon a photo album tucked into a battered shoebox. When he walked into the kitchen, his face was as white as a sheet.
Whos this? he asked, placing the photo on the table.
In the picture, Im nineteen, beaming with happiness in the arms of a tall lad in army kit. On the back, in bold scrawl: Lucy + Jack = forever. Wait for me, darling.
Next to it was a faded letter. Harry had already opened it.
Call your son Harry if its a boy he read in a hoarse whisper. Mum, is Jack my father? So whos Tom?
I felt the world spin under my feet.
Yes. Jack is your biological father.
Youve lied to me my entire life! he shouted, and in his eyes I saw not just hurt, but pure, raw hatred.
He flew out, grabbing his jacket, out the door before I could find a word to explain.
Harry Running Into Emptiness
The rain stings my face, but I dont care. My mind is in a whirl: My whole life is fake. I dont want to go to my mates. I just want to disappear.
I remember Tom teaching me to ride a bike, taking me fishing. Did he always know I wasnt his own? Or is he just another victim of Mums lies?
I wander into the old part of town, to that derelict old childrens homethe Haven, as everyone called it round here. Its where the lost crowd always hung out. I shimmy in through a smashed window, find a cold spot on the floor and switch on my phone. In the letter Ive still got, theres a military address and a full name: Jack William Carter.
I type the name into Google. What I find finishes me off.
Lucy Bitter Truth
Tom comes in from work and finds me in tears.
Hes found it all, Tom. The album, the letters…
Tom sits down heavily.
It was bound to happen, Lucy. Somehow. We just need to find the right way to tell him why you stopped waiting.
I close my eyes and Im back living that nightmare. Jack was sent to Afghanistan, lost in conflict. We wrote letters, clinging to hope. Until one day, I opened a letter sent by a strangera girl named Emily.
Turns out, near the base, Jack had another fiancée. He wrote her the same words as he did to me. Promised her forever. Got tangled in his own fear, living like every day might be his last.
Then the telegrams arrived. Two at once.
I was crushed by double betrayal: He died before he could explain himself, and left me pregnant, with only the sickening realisation that I wasnt his only one. When Tom came into my life, he wrapped me in silence and safety. All I wanted was to erase Jack from my memory. I chose a life without pain.
Harry The Haven and an Unexpected Meeting
I spend the night in that crumbling building. In the morning, heavy boots thud on the rotten floorboards. Police.
Oi, lad, whatre you doing here? Everyones out looking for you. Your mums reported you missing.
I get carted off to the station. Im slumped there, blankly staring, when the officer says,
Mr Carter? Youve a visitor. Not your mum.
An older woman walks in, trembling, clutching an ancient handbag. But her eyesmy eyes.
Harry? she whispers. Oh my dear, you look just like him…
Who are you?
Im your grandmother. Jacks mother. Im Eileen Carter. Your mum rang me for the first time in all these years.
Collision of Truths
Your mother wouldnt see me, Granny says softly, as we step out of the police station. She found out about that other girlEmily. She was an orphan and we took her in. Jack was so young, foolish, frightened hed never come home. Emily was there, made him meals, washed his clothesa wartime romance. But he did love you, Harry. His last letter to me was all about Lucy and the baby.
Just then Toms car screeches up. He jumps out, hair all over the place, ghostly pale. As soon as he sees me, he freezes.
Harry
I look at my grandmother, then at the man whos been my shield for sixteen years.
Lucy Putting the Pieces Back Together
We sit round the little kitchen tablethe four of us: me, Tom, Harry, and Eileen Carter. The old albums on the table between us.
I hated him for that girl, I admit, holding Harrys gaze. And I was terrified youd grow up just like himrestless, reckless. I wanted to cut his genes out of your life.
You had no right, Harry says sharply. But then he eyes Tom. And you, Dad? Did you know?
I did, says Tom quietly. But I loved you, Harry. I always have. From the moment I held you in the hospital.
Harry Two Fathers
A year on, and Ive got two pictures on my shelf. One of Jackyoung, handsome, made a mess of things, but he gave me life. Some weekends, I go with Gran to visit his grave.
The other is Tom. He still tells me off for leaving my room in a state and helps me with my design sketches.
Ive realised something: the truth isnt a straight line. Its a mess of love, lies, fear, and grace.
Jack was my beginning. Tom became my foundation. Now, looking at them both, I know: Im not a mistake or a fraud. I am a person whos been doubly loved. One loved me with his life; the other, every single day, with quiet, unshakeable loyalty to our family.
Home isnt a place without secrets. Home is where youre found, even if youve hidden yourself in the darkest haven.
