So, you won’t believe the drama that’s been unfolding at work—honestly, it’s all anyone’s talked about for the past two weeks. The office is split right down the middle, with everyone whispering, throwing looks, and picking sides. And it’s all because of what happened to our sweet, quiet colleague, Emily.
Emily’s the type you’d describe as delicate—like fine china. Twenty-five, soft-spoken, always polite, even when things get tense. We’d all been waiting for her to tie the knot with her bloke, James—they’d been together nearly two years, and it seemed perfect. He was the whole package: thoughtful, reliable, always bringing her flowers, taking her out for dinner, whisking her off on little getaways. Honestly, we were all a bit jealous.
Then came the proposal—ring, sweet speech, the lot. Emily was glowing. Wedding plans kicked off, and everything was on track… until her sister, Rebecca, got involved. Rebecca’s the polar opposite of Emily—loud, messy, always causing scenes. She’s turned up at the office more than once, demanding Emily “lend” her a hundred quid till payday. And let’s just say it wasn’t for groceries.
James had seen Rebecca in action—barging into their flat, starting rows, the works. He kept his distance, and honestly, who could blame him? Even Emily couldn’t control her. Rebecca lived by her own rules, wrecking everything in her path.
But still, James went ahead with it—proposed, bought the rings, booked the venue. A week before the big day, everything fell apart.
That Friday, Emily invited James round to her parents’ for dinner. Started off normal—Rebecca was even sober, which was a shock. But then, near midnight, she poured herself a huge glass of wine, downed it, and just… broke.
“I think about my son… where is he now? How is he?” Her voice cracked. “I signed the papers… I gave him up.”
Dead silence. Emily went white. Their mum tried to steer Rebecca to the kitchen, but she was past stopping.
“I had a healthy baby boy… and I was scared. Alone, no money, no dad… so I left him. I signed him away. I’m sorry.”
James just sat there, staring at Emily like he was waiting for her to say something. She just nodded. She’d known. And she’d never told him.
Next day, James vanished. Didn’t show up to work, wouldn’t answer calls. Two days later, he cancelled the wedding, telling Emily bluntly, “I can’t marry into a family that treats a child like a mistake. I’m sorry.”
Since then? Emily’s a ghost. Shows up to work pale, no makeup, eyes empty. Doesn’t talk. Just… floats through the day. And the office? Split. Some reckon James was weak—ran instead of dealing with it. Others say Emily should’ve told him sooner. That if you’re marrying someone, they deserve the truth, no matter how ugly.
Me? I don’t know. Rebecca blew everything up, but was it just her fault? She had a baby and walked away. The family knew. Said nothing. No one stepped in.
And James? Maybe he just realised—if Emily could keep something this big quiet, what else wouldn’t she say?
Now, in the same office where we used to gush over dresses and cake designs, the air’s just… heavy. And Emily? She sits at her desk, doesn’t smile, doesn’t look up. Only once did I overhear her murmur into the phone, “No, Mum… he’s not coming back. And I don’t blame him. It just… hurts. So much.”
