The Wedding Was Just a Week Away When She Told Me She Didn’t Want to Get Married—Everything Was Alre…

So, imagine this: my wedding was just a week away when she told me she didnt want to go through with it. Everything was sortedthe venue, the paperwork, the rings, even part of the family do. Id spent months organising the lot.

All throughout our relationship, I really thought I was doing the right thing. I was working full-time, and every month Id put aside about 20% of my wages for herfor her hair appointments, her nails or whatever she fancied. Not because she didn’t workshe had her own job and spent her earnings as she liked. I took on the costs because I honestly felt, as her partner, that was my job. I never once asked her for money for bills. Every meal out, every cinema trip, any little getawayI was footing the bill, no question.

About a year before the wedding, I did something hugeI suggested we take her whole family to the seaside. And I mean everyone: her parents, her brothers, their kids, even a couple of cousins. There were loads of us. To make it happen, I took on overtime, stopped buying things for myself, saved up for months. When we finally went, I covered everythingaccommodation, travel, food, the whole bit. She looked chuffed, her family was grateful. Turns out, though, that didnt mean anything to her.

So when she said she wanted to call things off, she told me I was too much. That I expected too much love, too much attention, too much closeness. That I wanted to hold her, to text her, to check in. That shes not like thatshes always been more reserved, and that I was making her feel suffocated. She said I was after things she just couldnt give.

Then she dropped something Id never heard beforethat shed never actually wanted to get married. She accepted when I proposed because apparently, Id pushed too hard. I got her family involved, and it made her feel trapped. Id popped the question in a restaurant in front of her family. I thought it was a touching gesture; for her, it was like a cage. She said she couldnt turn me down in front of everyone.

Five days before we were meant to say I do at the registry officeeverything already in placeshe decided to come clean. She told me she felt like I was forcing a life on her that she never wanted. That Id done too much for her, and it made her feel awkward, indebted, tied down. That shed rather leave now than go through with something that wasnt right for her.

After that, she left. No shouting, no making up, no trying to sort things. Just contracts, paid bills, plans in ruins, and one cancelled wedding. She never wavered in her decision. Thats where it finished.

That was the week I learned that being the bloke who pays for everything, fixes everything, and is always there, doesnt mean someones going to stick around.
