They Were Expecting Their Own Child and No Longer Needed the Baby from the Orphanage

I sat quietly in the corner, tears running down my cheeks, unable to make sense of what Id done wrong. Why had my mum and dad brought me to this childrens home? Why had they left me behind? Id always tried my best to please them. I loved them deeply and did what I was told.

My birth mother left me just after I was born, right there in the hospital. After that, Charlotte and George adopted me. They had always wanted a child but couldnt have one of their own, so they took me from the childrens home. Even though Charlotte doted on me, hugged me, and did her best to care for me, she still struggled to truly be my mum. George never really accepted me as his own, no matter how hard I tried.

As the years passed, I grew up believing I belonged in their family, and I loved them more than anything. Then, one day, Charlotte found out she was expecting a baby. She was overjoyed, and when she told George, they both just couldnt stop smiling.

That was the beginning of everything changing for me. My parents barely noticed me anymore; I felt like a nuisance, as though I was getting in their way. Georges patience wore thin, and sometimes, hed lash out at me. I soon realised there was no longer a place for me in their lives. They decided I should be sent back to the childrens home. They signed the paperwork, and after going through court, their parental rights were removed.

After the hearing, Charlotte came up to me and quietly said I would now be living in the home. I cried and called after her, desperate for a sign of love, but she simply turned her back and left. I was only five at the time and felt utterly betrayed by those I had trusted so much. Twice now, people I loved had abandoned me: first my birth mother, now my adoptive parents.

The judge who ruled in our case watched everything unfold, and after a pause, she walked over to one of the staff from the home and said she wanted to adopt me. She just couldnt bear to see a child so heartbreakingly let down by those he trusted. Her name was Catherine, and she went through all the paperwork swiftly. In no time at all, she took me home.

Catherine began calling me Charlie, always so gently, and in time, I forgot about my old life. I grew close to her, more than I ever had with anyone else. School became my haven. I worked hard and left secondary school with top marks even won a gold medal for my efforts. I went on to medical school, and after graduating, got a position at a reputable surgery.

Years later, a patient walked into my consulting room, and my heart stopped. It was Georgemy first adoptive father. He told me that Charlotte had died in childbirth, their baby didnt survive, and after, he had spiraled into drinking. Eventually, a woman named Sarah helped him get clean and persuaded him to seek help.

Thats how he ended up in my care. Though I was young, the old pain was fresh, remembering how hed treated me as a child. Still, I remembered the oath Id taken, the promise to help anyone in need, and so I did my job. Funny how fate worksyou cant wrong a child and expect life to let you off lightly. I chose not to hold onto anger or seek revenge; life, it seemed, had already meted out more punishment than I ever could.
