This morning, an eighteen-year-old girl gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Shortly afterwards, she filled out the necessary paperwork, called for a cab, and left the hospital without a backward glance. I doubt she had any inkling of the surprise that would await her little one not long after.
When my husband and I arrived at St. Marys Hospital that eveninghearts fluttering with anticipation as contractions startedwe were brimming with joy at the thought of welcoming our fourth child. Ours was already a large, bustling family.
I should mention that our second and third children are twins, which was quite the shock as no one in either of our families had ever had twins before. During this pregnancy, it became a running family joke: What if its twins again? My parents were in awe when they heard the news and pitched in tremendously those first few days. After our second scan, we were reassured: there would be just one baby this time.
And so, our fourth little ninja arriveda single, healthy child! All my earlier nerves melted away. My husband had sorted a private room for us ahead of time, and we soon settled in.
A few hours later, a midwife brought in our newborn for feeding. Suddenly, the ward manager came in, looking quite troubled. We have a bit of a situation she began.

The ward manager gently suggested, We could say you gave birth to her, if youd like. But I knew I couldnt bear the thought of the baby ending up in foster care, not when she deserved so much more. It broke my heart. Of course, such an arrangement would be illegal.
Legally adopting her was a possibility, but, as the manager explained, the process could drag on for months and would offer no guarantees. In the meantime, she would be placed in care.
It was terribly sad. To be honest, the circumstances truly shook me. Ive always gotten along with the senior matron, Mrs. Camerona kind and deeply compassionate woman, whom I often chatted with outside the hospital setting. Perhaps thats why she felt she could entrust me with such a difficult proposal.
