Today, Ive invited my former daughter-in-law and her children for Christmas Eve, but Ive forbidden my son from joining us. Im preparing the Christmas pudding, setting the table, and eagerly awaiting the arrival of my beloved daughter-in-law with the grandchildren. Ive baked a cake for the little ones and bought them gifts. Let them sing carols in my home and bring some holiday cheer. For as long as Im able, Ill always stand by them.
While cooking the Christmas Eve dinner, I couldnt resist calling my former daughter-in-law to invite her and the children. I made it clear to my son he wasnt welcome. Id warned him years ago, when he left his first wife, that I would never accept another daughter-in-lawbecause to me, she will always be Emily.
My son divorced five years ago. It was terribly irresponsible of him, walking out for another woman when his youngest was barely a few months old. Of course, hed been cheating long before that, spinning lies to his wife the whole time.
While Emily was juggling two young children on her own, my son spent hours supposedly “at work,” though really, he was seeing someone else. Eventually, his mistress gave him an ultimatum to choose. So he packed his bags and left, abandoning his wife with two toddlers.
From the very beginning, I sided with Emily. My son acted disgracefully. He pays child support, but what good is that? Children need a father and a stable family, not just money. He didnt listen to me and remarried last year. Everyone assumed Id accept his new wife, but I refused. Recently, he had another child, but even that hasnt softened my stance.
To me, my grandchildren are Emilys children. I dont need others. Ive even told him that one day, hell come crawling back. For now, he stays away, so I spend the holidays with Emily and the grandchildren.
Emily and I have a wonderful relationship. We celebrate together, call often, and visit regularly. She devotes herself to raising the children, and as their grandmother, I do everything I can to helplooking after them, supporting them financially, even assisting with homework. Over the years, Emily has become like a daughter to me. Her parents live nearly 400 miles away and cant offer much help.
Now, Christmas is almost here. Im baking the pudding, laying the table, and waiting for my dear daughter-in-law and the children to arrive. Ive made a cake for the little ones and wrapped their presents. Let them fill my house with carols and bring warmth to the season. No matter what, Ill always be there for them.
