Twice a week, my dad would leave home for a few hours and return bursting with energy and in an exceptionally good mood.

When I was ten, and my older brother, Jack, was twelve, he spent most days kicking a football around outside with his mates, and we hardly ever chatted. I was the one who helped Mum with tidying up and cooking dinner, while Dad worked long hours at the factory and got home pretty late most nights. After dinner, wed gather round the dining table in the living room, and then Dad would slip on his polished leather shoes, spend a moment staring at his reflection in the hallway mirror, and head out without saying a word. Mum always watched the door after he left, and I used to try and figure out why she looked that wayor where Dad actually went.

One evening, fuelled by curiosity, I decided to follow Dad as he left. He walked briskly to the Town Hall, slipped inside, and I hesitated for a bit before finally sneaking in after him. Inside, I bumped into a stunning lady who was instantly familiarturns out she was a famous opera singer from the Royal Theatre! She invited me to join her, and together we stepped into a grand hall crowded with people.

To my utter surprise, Dad was up there, right on stage, singing opera as if hed been doing it forever. He had kept this gift hidden from everyone. He poured his heart into each note, completely unaware that I was sitting among the audience. I couldnt help but cry with happiness. The whole crowd cheered him on with roaring applause, and when he finally finished, he was showered in bouquets of flowers. After everyone left, Dad and I strolled together through the park, both laughing and in high spirits.

That night at home, I quietly whispered to Mum that Dad wasnt sneaking off to meet another woman. She just softly replied, I know. It became clear she was well aware of his secret talent and the real reason behind those evening outings.

From then on, I felt so proud of Dads remarkable abilities and treasured our little secret. I was grateful for the joy his incredible voice brought to our family and how much happiness he shared through his gift.
