Unexpected Encounter by the Shore

**An Accidental Encounter by the River**

Emma and her husband, along with their daughter, made a bold choice—to swap the bustle of London for the quiet life in a Devon village. They bought a cottage, started a small farm, and planted a vegetable patch. A fresh chapter had begun. Each evening, Emma would stroll by the river with her goats, watching the sun dip below the hills, savouring the peace.

“Mum, it’s getting dark—where are you off to with the goats?” called her daughter, Sophie, puzzled.
“Just down to the riverbank—the grass is sweeter there,” Emma replied. “I’ll be back in an hour, don’t fret.”

But an hour passed, then two, and still no sign of her. Sophie grew uneasy and persuaded her father to go searching. They found Emma sitting on the garden bench, pale and trembling, caught between laughter and tears.

“Mum, what happened?” Sophie asked.
“I saw… something,” Emma breathed. “Not a ghost. Worse.”

Just an hour earlier, she’d been walking the usual path by the river. While the goats grazed, she dozed off on the grass. Waking at dusk, she jumped up to gather them—but the stubborn creatures had wandered into the brambles. Emma followed, only to spot something long and black moving behind the last goat, Lily.

At first, she thought: stoat. Then fear gripped her—what if it was wild, rabid? The creature wouldn’t back off. Lily began bleating, and Emma raised her stick, ready to defend her… until the thing leaped—as if about to pounce.

But when it was all over, she crept closer… and found, of all things, a pair of enormous men’s boxers, snagged on Lily’s leg by a fishing line. Likely left to dry on the bushes by some careless angler.

Emma collapsed onto the grass, laughing—relief, fear, adrenaline, all bursting out at once. That’s how her family found her. And from then on, she was strictly forbidden to take the goats to the river at dusk. One never knew what else might “come alive” there.

*Lesson learned: the countryside holds more surprises than you’d reckon—sometimes even laundry with a vendetta.*
