Vanessa Returns Early from Her Business Trip to Find a Baby at Home

Vanessa came home early from her business trip and found a baby in her house.
Expecting to surprise her husband, Éric, with her unexpected return, she instead stumbled upon a scene that shattered her assumptions: a baby lay beside him in bed, with no warning to prepare her for the truth about to unfold.
After three grueling weeks in Paris, Vanessa finally returned to the gentle warmth of Nice. Exhausted, she longed only to collapse into Érics arms and sleep in her own bed. Her late-night arrival, delayed by a train, didnt dampen her eagerness. Quietly slipping inside, she hung her trench coat, set down her bag, and tiptoed upstairscareful not to wake him.
She hadnt told Éric shed be home early, wanting to truly surprise him. A tender smile played on her lips as she approached their bedroom, planning to slip in unnoticed and watch his reaction when he woke.
But nothing could have prepared her for what she saw.
Moonlight spilled through the window, illuminating Éric fast asleep on one side of the bedand a small baby, swaddled in a soft blue blanket, nestled safely beside a pillow on the other.
Vanessa froze, breath catching. Theyd never had children. Éric had no familyhed grown up in foster care. Whose baby was this?
Circling the bed, she shook him awake.
Éric. Éric! Wake up!
Bleary-eyed, he stared at her in confusion. Huh? Vanessa? Whathow are you here?
Come to the kitchen. Now.
Still groggy, he followed. Vanessa flicked on the light, her gaze icy.
Care to explain why theres a baby in our bed?
Éric rubbed his face, exhausted. Someone left it at our doorstep a few days ago. I didnt know what to do so I brought it in.
What? Why didnt you call the police?
I meant to. But it wouldnt stop cryingit needed food, diapers I got caught up. Thought Id care for it temporarily. Look, Im wiped, and you must be too. Lets sleep. Well talk tomorrow.
She gaped at him. Youre joking.
Please, he murmured, turning back toward the bedroom. Morning.
Drowning in unanswered questions, Vanessa followed, slipping into bed with her mind in chaos. Yet fatigue swallowed her faster than she expected.
7:03 a.m.
Muffled voices.
Vanessa stirred at the sound of a woman speaking.
Éric, you have to tell her the truth. You cant keep lying.
I will, he replied. Im just waiting for the DNA test results.
Her heart pounded. DNA test? Truth? Who was this woman?
Silently, she crept toward the living room

The plan had been simple: surprise Éric by coming home a day early. Instead, she found him cradling a baby wrapped in sky-blue blankets.
Shock gave way to suspicion.
When she shook him awake, Éric insisted the baby had been left on their doorstep days priorno note, no explanation. But why keep it secret?
Then, at dawn, a strangers voice.
Vanessa burst in, ready for answersonly to learn the woman, Maria, claimed to be Érics long-lost sister. A chance supermarket encounter had sparked recognition.
While awaiting DNA proof, Mariain a crisishad asked Éric to watch her son, Leo, for the night.
Disbelief melted into stunned acceptance. The resemblance was undeniable.
Days later, the test confirmed it: Éric and Maria were siblings.
Relief washed over Vanessa. Watching Éric embrace being an unclehis first taste of familyshe realized little Leo had bridged a forgotten past.
Her ordinary business trip had ended with an unexpected family and a hopeful future.
