Waking in the middle of the night, Emily felt an emptiness beside her. Confused, she reached out, hoping to feel the familiar warmth of her husband, James.
But sleep didnt return, and James hadnt come back to bed in nearly fifteen minutes. Her heart pounded anxiously as she sat up, staring into the dark room. What if something had happened? Was he unwell?
She tried to calm herself, thinking perhaps hed woken from insomnia and busied himself with work. Yet unease clung to her.
Not wanting to worry needlessly, Emily carefully rose from the bed and, quietly opening the bedroom door, tiptoed toward the kitchen. As she neared, she froze just steps away.
She heard Jamess voice. He was on the phone. The speaker was loud enough for her to make out the words of the other personor rather, the other woman.
“Yes, darling, Ive already booked the tickets to Spain,” James said, his voice brimming with anticipation. “Well have an unforgettable time together. No one will ever know.”
Emily felt the ground vanish beneath her. Her world shattered in an instant. Every word, every phrase cut into her like sharp blades.
So many years together, so many plans, joys, and sorrows theyd faced side by side. How could he?
Emily returned to the bedroom. Lying in the dark, she felt tears roll down her cheeks. Her heart ached with pain, and inside her raged a storm of anger, hurt, and bitter disappointment.
Finally, steeling herself, she got up, walked to the wardrobe, and began packing Jamess things into a suitcase.
When he stepped into the bedroom, he saw her with the suitcase and asked in surprise, “Whats going on?”
Emily looked at him, her eyes filled with resolve. “Ive packed your bag,” she said calmly. “So you can take it with you to Spain.”
“What are you talking about?” James laughed nervously.
“Dont pretend, James. I heard your phone call in the kitchen.”
James visibly tensed, his hands trembling. He tried to speak, but Emily stopped him. “You can pack the rest yourself. Take the suitcase and go to a hotelor wherever you like. And after your holiday, dont expect to find me here.”
That night, Emilys life changed forever.
As James left, she lay back down on the bed, knowing sleep wouldnt come. But one thought remained: everything would be different now. No more illusions, no more pain from betrayal. She was finally free.
