Want My Husband? He’s All Yours!” Said the Wife with a Smile to the Stranger at Her Door.

“Do you want my husband? He’s yours!” said the wife with a smile, addressing the unfamiliar woman at her door.

“Hold on a moment, Emily! Someones at the door. Ill call you back once I see who it is,” replied Charlotte reluctantly, ending her phone call with her childhood friend. Emily had been recounting, in hilarious detail, the birthday party of her mother-in-law, and Charlotte had been laughing uncontrollably, as if watching a comedy show.

Charlotte walked to the door, peered through the peephole, and froze in surprise. Shed expected a neighbourstrangers rarely made it past the security of their building. But standing there was a young woman with an odd look about her, someone Charlotte had never seen before.

She decided against opening the doorbetter to avoid interactions with strangers, especially these days, when scams were everywhere. Charlotte had a firm rule: no conversations with unknown callers. Con artists preyed on the gullible, but she wasnt one of them.

She lifted her phone to resume her chat with Emily, but the doorbell rang again. The woman outside was persistent, convinced someone was home and determined to get an answer.

Charlotte was alone in the flat; her husband, James, had gone to help a friend with some garden work. She returned to the door and looked through the peephole again, studying the stranger more closely.

Something about her seemed both strange and pitiful, but Charlotte sensed no real danger.

“Whats the worst that could happen if I open the door and tell her to leave? Then I can get back to my quiet weekend,” Charlotte thought. “Shes probably lost or trying to sell me something ridiculous.”

Resolved, she opened the door. The woman in the hallway straightened immediately, nervously adjusting her hair before speaking.

“Good afternoon! Are you Charlotte?” she asked, fidgeting with the scarf around her neck. “Well, of course you arewhy even ask?”

“Now thats interesting,” Charlotte mused. “Scammers are getting sophisticated these days. She even knows my name.”

“Who are you, and what do you want? Youve been standing here for five minutes. I didnt invite you, so say what you came to say or leave!” Charlotte said firmly.

“Is James home?” the stranger asked, catching Charlotte off guard.

“Well, thats a twist,” Charlotte thought, suspicion rising. “She knows my husbands name too. Shes definitely prepared.”

“Youre here for James?” Charlotte asked, though shed meant to say something entirely different.

“No, I came to speak with you. But if James is here, itll be harder for me,” the woman replied with unsettling casualness.

“Harder for you? Whats going on?” Charlotte wondered, curiosity prickling.

“Hes not here. What do you want?”

“Perhaps we should step inside. Its awkward discussing these things in the hallway,” the woman suggested, growing bolder.

“Absolutely not! I dont know you, and I dont let strangers into my home. Say what you need to say, and quickly,” Charlotte snapped.

“Do you really want to discuss the intimate details of my relationship with James out here, where the neighbours can hear?” the woman replied with a mocking smile.

“What? What relationship?” Charlotte exclaimed, her voice louder than intended.

“Charlotte, is everything alright? Why are you shouting?” asked Mrs. Thompson, her neighbour from across the hall, who had just stepped out of the lift.

“Oh, hello, Mrs. Thompson! Everythings fine. Hows the weather looking?” Charlotte tried to divert her attention.

“Looks like rain,” Mrs. Thompson replied, though she seemed in no hurry to go inside, clearly curious about the commotion.

“Come in,” Charlotte said irritably, motioning for the woman to enter.

Once inside, the woman glanced around the flat with interest, her eyes lingering on various objects.

“Youve got five minutes. Talk,” Charlotte said, blocking her from going further into the living room. “This isnt a museum.”

“My name is Sophie,” the woman began, removing her scarf and coat. “James and I are in love.”

“Oh, how original! Couldnt you come up with something less clichéd?” Charlotte interrupted with a sarcastic smile.

“Whats clichéd? People fall in loveit happens. Youre not the first wife whose husband has strayed,” Sophie retorted confidently, trying to step past Charlotte.

“And youre certain he doesnt love me anymore but loves you?” Charlotte asked, still smiling.

“Absolutely! Otherwise, I wouldnt be here,” Sophie said boldly.

“Well, the problem is, my husband doesnt love anyone. He doesnt know how. So youre mistaken, darling,” Charlotte replied coolly.

Sophie opened her mouth to argue, but just then, the door openedand James walked in.

He looked stunned to find an unfamiliar woman in their hallway.

“Sophie? What are you doing here on a Saturday? Is this about work?” he asked, confused.

“No, shes here for you,” Charlotte said, savouring the moment.

“For me? What do you mean? Did something happen at the office?” James pressed, growing more bewildered.

“No, darling. She came to take you away from me. Permanently,” Charlotte replied with an ironic smile.

Sophie, visibly flustered, quickly grabbed her coat and began backing toward the door.

“Leaving so soon? What about James? Wasnt he the reason you came? Honestly, Im more than happy to let you have him,” Charlotte teased.

But Sophie was already out the door without another word.

“What on earth was that about?” James asked, completely baffled.

“You tell me! Why did this bold woman show up, demanding a divorce and insisting youd move in with her?” Charlotte asked, crossing her arms.

“Are you serious?” James replied, looking genuinely shocked. “I have no idea whats going on. She started acting strangely at work, but I never encouraged her. Ive had enough of this nonsense. I made you a promise, remember?”

“Good. Because you know me, JamesI dont tolerate this sort of thing. But honestly, women these days will go to absurd lengths to fix their own messes,” Charlotte said, shaking her head.

James kicked off his shoes and headed to the kitchen, while Charlotte stayed lost in thought for a moment. She vowed not to let such incidents disturb the peace of their home. Against her will, she smiled at how poorly executed Sophies entire “plan” had been.

One thing was clearno matter what others tried, their marriage was stronger than anyone could imagine.

Love, after all, isnt just about wordsits about actions, trust, and knowing exactly where you stand. And thats something no outsider can ever disrupt.
