We Never Discussed Child Support—We Simply Agreed I’d Pay My Husband for Our Son’s Upkeep, Yet He’s Been Living Off My Money for Years

Because I was the one who left my family for another man and caused our marriage to fall apart, David decided that I owed him for his broken heart. He didnt allow me to take our son, and my boy wanted to live with his father anyway, not with me. As much as it pained me, I couldnt convince him otherwise or force him to come with me. The whole matter was settled quite quicklythey let me go, and in return, I sent them money once or twice a month. At the time, my ex-husband had a job and was earning, but when he realised that I was fairly well-off and that my new partner contributed too so our son never went without, David quit working and began to live off our money.

As my son grew up, his father spoiled him rottenmeals from takeaways, days off school whenever he wanted, holidays away, expensive gadgets and kitchen appliances. Over the years, my son developed a rather dismissive attitude, and he wanted to see less and less of me. Whatever I bought him or did for him, Dad managed to outdo me, even though it was still my money. By the age of eleven, the lad didnt even bother to wonder how his father had become so well-off while always being at home.

My current husband suggested perhaps I was giving them too much. We also began to consider our sons future education, and thought it best to save for university, rather than have my ex spend it all on senseless whims. I told my ex face to faceexplained Id supported them long enough and now it was his turn to handle the household expenses, while Id manage savings for our sons future. He hit out at me, telling me what a terrible mother and wife I was, and threatened to take me to court for child support, saying I hadnt actually given them anything.

I spoke to solicitors and they told me not to be intimidated or take his threats seriously, as he wouldnt get anywhere; after all, hed not worked for years and had been living entirely off my support. Still, I cant shake the feeling that Im the one losing out. Now my son resents me even more, thinking Ive abandoned his father.
