We Sacrificed Everything for Our Daughters, and Now I’m Alone: Why Do My Children Treat Me This Way?

My husband and I denied ourselves everything for our daughters, and now I’m alone and no one needs me. Why do my own children treat me this way?

When our girls grew up, my husband and I breathed a sigh of relief. We thought the hardest times were behind us, since we’d carried everything on our shoulders together. We both worked at a factory and lived very modestly. Our wages were barely enough to scrape by. But we made sure our girls never felt less than anyone else. They always had decent clothes, school supplies, and even enough for a trip to the cinema now and then.

We hardly ever spent on ourselves. I can’t remember the last time I bought a new coat—everything went to the children. One after the other, our daughters went off to university. And again, the expenses piled up. Their student loans barely covered travel, so we stepped in. We bought clothes, paid rent, helped with groceries. I learned to count every penny all over again. But I never regretted it—as long as they had what they needed.

After graduation, both married. We were happy—our girls had settled down. Then came grandchildren—two boys, one from each daughter. And everything started over. After maternity leave, they both said nursery was too early and asked for my help. By then, I was retired but still worked part-time as a cleaner to make ends meet. After talking it over with my husband, we decided I’d care for the grandchildren while he kept working.

That’s how we lived—two pensions and his wages. Our sons-in-law started a business together, and in time, it flourished. We were proud, delighted. Even when they asked for money, we never refused—how could we? They were our children.

Then, one day, everything shattered. My husband left for work and… never came back. A heart attack. They couldn’t save him. I felt the ground vanish beneath me. We’d been together forty-two years, and I couldn’t imagine life without him. I was alone. For a while, the daughters visited, took the boys back, enrolled them in nursery. Then—silence. As if I’d been erased.

That’s when I realised my pension was pitiful. Before, we’d managed—my husband’s income had filled the gaps. But now? Rent, food, medicine… sometimes I stood in the chemist, choosing between pills or bread. When my daughters finally dropped by, I gathered the courage to speak.

Softly, I said, “Girls, if you could just help a little with the bills, I could afford my medication…” The eldest cut me off—said they had their own expenses, that everything was so expensive these days. The youngest? She just stayed quiet, as if she hadn’t heard. After that—nothing. No calls, no visits.

Now I sit alone in my flat, surrounded by photographs, the children’s old crafts, the tiny booties I knitted for the boys. None of them come anymore. No one asks how I am. No one even checks if I’m still alive. And yet, once—I was everything to them. I made their meals, ironed their clothes, rocked their prams through the night. I taught them to speak, to read, I woke at their first cry.

These days, I watch from my window as other grandmothers walk by, holding their grandchildren’s hands, laughing. And here I am—with silence. And bitterness. Because I don’t understand—what did I do to deserve this? When did I stop mattering? Do children really forget so quickly everything that was done for them?

I don’t ask for much. I don’t want their money or gifts. Just a little warmth, a few words, a call once in a while. For someone to ask, “Mum, how are you?” For my grandsons to visit, even just to sit beside me. But it seems that’s a luxury I’m not allowed.

Every day, it gets harder to believe they’ll remember me. But I still wait. Because a mother’s heart never stops waiting. Even when it hurts. Even when it feels like betrayal.
