We Were Just 22 When We Broke Up: He Told Me He Needed “Something Different”—Then I Discovered He’d …

We were both twenty-two when we parted ways. One afternoon, he told me he no longer felt the same, that he needed other things in life.

Only a few days later, I got a call from a mutual friend. She asked me, Is it true that hes seeing an older woman now?

I was taken aback and asked what she meant. She sent me a picturehe was sitting in a London pub, arm around a woman clearly much older than him. It wasnt gossip. It was real. When people asked what had happened, I didnt make up excuses. I told them plainly: he left me for a much older woman.

Thats when everything began.

A week afterwards, a friend messaged me on WhatsApp: Hey, are you okay?

I asked why she was worried. She replied, Well hes saying some odd things about you.

Confused, I asked her to explain. She told me hed been saying I didnt shower regularly, that my underarms smelled, that my breath was terrible, and even claimed hed seen lice in my hair once. I froze, staring at my phone, not knowing how to respond.

Soon, even more comments reached me. Another friend called to say he had shared the same things at a get-together, laughing as he spoke about me in front of everyone. Hed actually said, Youve no idea what I put up with.

When asked why he hadnt ended things sooner, he simply shrugged it off and replied, Unfortunately.

I began to notice the looks. People who used to greet me kindly now avoided my gaze or gave me strange glances. A colleague, who had always envied me, handed me deodorant just in case. I couldnt believe how quickly a lie could spread. Hed said it once, then kept repeating it, backing it up and building on it.

Eventually, I decided to message him: Why are you saying those things about me?

It took hours before he replied: You started lying about me.

I told him Id only ever said the truththat he left to be with somebody else. He replied, Thats nobodys business.

He never denied what hed been saying. He never asked anyone to stop repeating his words. He never tried to set the record straight. He just let the rumours spiral.

All the while, he appeared in public with his new partner, and insisted that no one discuss their age difference. I was left behind, collateral damage.

The relationship ended, but the gossip lingered for months. I had to change my social circle, stop visiting certain places, distance myself from people who kept repeating his stories. He simply carried on.

Its often us, women, who bear the brunt when men feel threatened or insecure. The experience taught me that words hold power. Sometimes, the only way forward is to rise above the noisebecause your worth is never defined by someone else’s stories.
