Emily had never wanted to marry. At just 19, she found herself expecting a child with a classmate shed dated for three years. She didnt feel as though she had much choiceshe didnt want her child to grow up without a father.
Though he was older than Emily, Tom was immature and constantly shirking responsibility. However, to his credit, he didnt try to run away from this one; he promised to marry her and raise the baby together. So, they began planning for the wedding.
Emily wouldve been glad to have a simple ceremony, but her relatives demanded a grand affair. She couldnt understand why she should spend a fortune making others happy, when she could use the money to buy everything her child would need. Yet nobody listened. Her mother-in-law and her own older sister picked the restaurant, the dress, and even the guest list.
When the time came for a dress fitting, Emily was reluctant to go. She pictured a gown covered in frills and glitterher sister and future mother-in-law werent known for their good taste. When she refused, her family called her ungrateful and were visibly upset. But Emily had more pressing concerns: finishing college, preparing for her exams, and getting ready for her babys arrival.
On the day, Emily went to the registry office in a simple white dress that suited her very well. Thats when things got interesting.
Her and Toms relatives didnt realise Emily had decided to keep her own surname; Tom was fine with it. But the mother-in-law was furious and began shouting for all the cameras, How can you not want to change your name?
Emily simply smiled and stepped aside. Tomorrow would bring more dramaa reception in Toms family village with all his relatives present. She needed to preserve her nerves.
The marriage lasted only a few years. Tom turned out to be useless as a husband and a father. Every weekend he would ignore his family, glued to his computer. When Emily finally ran out of patience, she packed her bags and left.
Her mother-in-law was unhappy with the turn of events, but Emily felt liberatedat last, she was free and truly happy.
And, as Emily learned, happiness isnt about pleasing everyone else or following tradition for the sake of it. Sometimes, taking the path that feels right for you leads to the freedom and peace you truly need.
