“When Life Gives You a Second Chance”
—Why are you back so early?— Alex muttered, buttoning his shirt inside out, completely flustered. But Emily wasn’t listening. She stood frozen in the hallway, fists clenched so tight her knuckles ached, staring at the red heels by the door. Not just any shoes—they were Sophie’s, her childhood best friend. She’d recognize them anywhere. She’d seen them in a dozen photos, perched under wine glasses on girls’ nights out. But here, in her own flat? Never.
It all started that morning at work. A sudden wave of nausea hit her, her vision spotting. At first, she blamed lack of sleep or stress. Until her colleague, Lily, leaned in and whispered, —You’re not pregnant, are you?—
—Don’t be ridiculous,— Emily brushed it off, but her stomach twisted. She *knew*. Twenty minutes later, she was in the office loo, gripping a test with two undeniable pink lines.
She barely remembered stumbling into her boss’s office or leaving the building. All she could think about was rushing home to tell Alex—to see his face, to feel his arms around her, to cry happy tears. But…
She turned the key, stepped inside, flicked on the light. And there they were—those shoes. A second later, hushed voices from the bedroom. Maybe she was wrong. Maybe it was some ridiculous coincidence. But then she threw open the door and saw him—half-dressed, with Sophie, clutching a sheet to her chest.
—Emily? What the—?— Alex stammered, while Sophie stared at the floor, silent.
Everything after that was a blur. Shouting. Tears. Things flying across the room. Then… silence. He left. Emptiness. Emily sat alone in the wrecked flat, arms wrapped around her belly, where a tiny heartbeat already fluttered.
Days later, she made her choice. She couldn’t stay tied to Alex. She couldn’t raise a child alone. Her parents lived hours away, and now she was down a best friend. Her salary wouldn’t cover nappies, let alone a nanny. So she booked an appointment at a private clinic.
Sitting in the waiting room, staring at the wall, she trembled. She didn’t want this baby… and yet, she *did*, more than anything.
—Come in!— the doctor called.
She stood, stepped inside—and her heart stopped.
—Oliver?! Is that you?!
Her first love. Her school sweetheart. The boy whose cheek she’d kissed at prom—still her most tender memory.
—Emily?! No way!— Oliver leapt up, hugging her like an old friend.
They talked for ages, as if no time had passed. When the excitement settled, he finally asked, —But you’re here for a reason. What’s wrong?—
Hesitating, she told him everything—the betrayal, the pregnancy, her decision.
—And you’re sure you want to go through with this?— Oliver asked softly.
—Yes… I’m scared. I can’t do it alone…—
