When I open the wardrobe in our hotel room, I find a dress in my husbands suitcase that Ive never seen before. Its silk, midnight blue, perfectly folded among his shirts. Beside it, theres a small card from a boutique.
Im not usually a nosy person, but this dress is definitely not mine.
The hotel is truly luxurious. Were here for his companys annual gala dinner. The hallways sparkle with mirrors, the carpets feel plush underfoot, and from the restaurant downstairs, I catch the scent of fine dishes and champagne drifting up.
I look at the dress once more.
Its smaller than my size.
Just then, James walks into the room.
Still getting ready? he asks, loosening his tie.
Im standing there, holding the dress.
He freezes. Only for a momentbut its enough.
Whose dress is this? My voice is cool and steady.
He approaches, cautiously.
Its not what youre thinking.
That line always means exactly what you think.
You bought a dress for someone, I say. But that someone isnt me.
James sighs.
Emily, dont make a scene right now. We need to be downstairs soon.
Thats interesting, I reply quietly. So the dramas the problemnot the dress.
He glances at the door, as if hoping the corridor might rescue him.
Its a gift.
For whom?
He doesnt answer right away.
Which, of course, is an answer.
Silence fills the room. The air-con hums on.
How long? I ask.
Emily
How long?
It doesnt matter.
I look at the dress again. The silk is cold and smooth.
So shell be wearing this tonight?
He says nothing.
To the same event, sitting across from me?
James presses his lips shut.
It wasnt supposed to be like this.
But it is.
I put the dress back in his suitcase. Zip it up with slow care.
Who is she?
A colleague.
Of course.
I pick up my bag from the bed and start to slip my shoes on.
Where are you going? he asks.
To the party.
He stares at me in disbelief.
Seriously?
Of course.
I open the door to our room.
Im curious to see wholl wear that dress tonight.
Ten minutes later, we step into the grand hotel ballroom. Crystal chandeliers, music, people in cocktail dresses and tuxedos.
At a table across the room, I spot a young woman with long, blonde hair.
Shes wearing a midnight blue dress.
That dress.
She sees us and gives James a soft smile.
At that moment, I understand everything.
Its not a secret affair tucked away in a corner. Its something everyone around us probably already knows.
I walk straight over to their table.
The woman looks confident.
Hello, she says.
I glance at her dress.
It suits you.
She smiles wider.
Thank you.
James stands next to me, looking like a man bracing for a storm.
I slip off my wedding ring and set it on the table by his glass.
Gifts always reveal the truth, I say quietly. Sometimes, they just end up with the wrong person.
Then I turn and walk toward the exit.
As I go, I hear whispers and chairs shifting behind me.
But oddly, for the first time in ages, I dont feel humiliated.
Just free.
Tell me honestlydoes it hurt more to discover infidelity in private or before everyones eyes?
