When I Returned from the Shop, There Was a Man Sitting on the Bench Outside My Door Whom I Had Never Seen Before

When I returned home from the shops, I noticed a man sitting on the bench near the entrancea face entirely unfamiliar to me. He was holding an old, brown envelope in his hands. As soon as I approached, he glanced up.

Are you Charlotte? he asked.

I stopped in my tracks, the shopping bag knocking gently against my knee. Yes why?

He rose slowly from his seat. He looked to be in his fifties, his hair tinged with grey, and his eyes tired.

Ive been looking for you for two days, he said.

My heart tightened. Why?

He handed me the envelope. This belongs with you.

It felt weighty. Carefully, I opened it. Inside, there was an old photograph. It was memuch younger, standing at a bus stop with a book in my hand and a rucksack over my shoulder.

I clearly remembered that day. It was almost twenty years ago.

How did you get this? I asked.

He gave a melancholy smile. From my brother.

My stomach lurched. I dont have a brother.

No not yours.

He pointed at the picture. My brother took that.

Suddenly dizzy, I sat down on the bench.

Why? I managed.

Because he was in love with you then.

There was a pause. From the street, the distant sound of cars and a dog barking drifted over.

Ive never seen him, I whispered.

You have, he replied.

When?

He lowered himself beside me. He waited at the same bus stop every morning.

I tried to recall. Chilly mornings. People clutching coffees. Buses pulling up.

Was there a man in a dark coat with a camera? he asked.

Then the memory surfaceda man who always lingered a little apart. Sometimes reading the paper. Sometimes simply observing the crowd.

Yes I murmured.

He nodded. That was him.

I looked at the photo again. Why bring it to me now?

He hesitated. My brother died last week.

I gripped the picture tightly.

And he left this?

Yes.

He produced something else from the envelopea small note. I unfolded it. The handwriting was neat, careful.

If you ever find her, tell her she was the most beautiful thing I saw every morning.

My eyes welled with tears.

Sometimes, we walk past people who change our liveswithout knowing, without remembering them.

I looked at the man beside me. Why didnt he speak to me?

He smiled sorrowfully. He thought you were too happy to disturb.

Silence settled between us.

I held the photo, trying to conjure his face in my mind, but it wouldnt come.

Sometimes, the strangest feeling is realising youve been someones memory without ever knowing.

Let me ask you, honestlyif you discovered someone had thought of you for years, without saying a word, would you have wanted to know sooner?

Today, I learned that brief moments and accidental encounters can leave lasting marks. Ill try to remember that everyone we pass might have their own silent story connected to ours.
