When Love Passed Me By: A Life With a Woman Who Destroyed Me Daily
My silence lasted too long. I kept quiet because my pain seemed small compared to other tragedies. I stayed silent because I believed a man should endure. But now Im 58. Thirty years of marriage behind me, and in my soulonly exhaustion, pain, and emptiness. Life has slipped by, and happiness never came. This isnt a homejust walls. Its not a familyjust an endless war. Under the same roof, yet strangers. Together, but every daya fight just to exist. And maybe its already too late to change anything.
I married out of convenience. And Ive paid for it with my whole life.
I was 28 when my parents convinced me to marry Eleanor. They said, Enough with being a bachelorshes a good girl, steady, from a respectable family. I didnt love Eleanor. But back then, I thought love was just romantic nonsense for fools, and that stability mattered more. We married. And then the hell began.
Eleanor made it clear fast who ruled the house. She humiliated me in front of friends, mocked me in front of relatives. Sweet and charming in publicat home, she was an ice storm. She could say in front of everyone, What a caring husband! then throw a mug at me behind closed doors and hiss through her teeth, Youre worthless! Youre a nobody!
Anything set her offhow I sat, how I ate, how I spoke, how I breathed. But I stayed quiet. I endured. For the kids. So theyd have a family. I hoped things would get better. They never did. They got worse. I wasnt livingI was surviving. Even neighbours dont treat each other the way she treated me.
When the kids leftthe real nightmare started.
Our sons grew up, started their own families, and then the masks came off completely. Eleanor stopped pretending to be a wife. I built a small room next to the houseand moved there. No more meals together, no chats, no laughter. We shared the kitchen, the dishes, the fridge. She labelled food containers so I wouldnt touch them. Funny, isnt it? One roof, but it felt like two separate houses.
I ate alone. Slept alone. Woke upwith the same weight in my chest. And when someone said, You and Eleanor are such a strong couple!I wanted to scream. If this is strength, then its just a cage.
Her every day started with accusations and ended with insults.
If Eleanor was home, everything turned into hell. She could start with, You forgot the bins again, you useless man!and end with how Id ruined her life. Youre a failure! Youve always been in the way!that was her favourite line. I tried to stay quiet. I thought if I didnt react, shed tire herself out. But no. Her hatred never rested. She needed to tear someone downand I was right there.
Once, I overheard her on the phone with a friend: Hes like a piece of furniture. Sits in the corner and doesnt bother anyone. Thats when I truly understoodI didnt exist anymore. Id been crushed. And the worst part? Nowhere to go. Id built this house with my own hands. Worked hard, raised the boys, saved every penny now I just had to endure so I wouldnt end up on the street.
Why am I still hereI dont even know.
Leave? And go where? The kids have their own struggles. They live separate lives. They visit rarely, and when they dothey pretend everythings fine here. Its easier for them. And me? I dont care anymore. I wait. I wait for it all to end. To stop clenching my teeth in frustration. For the hate to fade, so I dont have to defend myself every day from someone whos become a stranger.
Maybe Im not writing this for me. But for those who can still change something. For those at a crossroads. Pleasedont marry without love. Dont live with someone who dims your light. Dont sacrifice yourself for appearances. The kids will grow up. And youll be left. Face to face with someone who doesnt love you. And one day youll realiseyour whole life has passed you by. Just like mine.
