When My Mum Discovered I Was Married, Had a Good Job, and Owned My Own Flat, She Rushed Over to Ask …

When my mother found out that I was married, had a good job, and was living in a flat of my own, she showed up swiftly to ask for financial support.

My mother had always been quite strict with me. My father was often away on business trips, so it was just the two of us at home. Father loved me dearly, but his returns always meant arms full of gifts. My mother, on the other hand, wasnt one to show affection in the same way. One day, Father left on a trip and never came back.

At school, I never really had any friends. I looked rather shabby, dressed in an old, faded uniform Mother found on a street market. Shed always say, Wear what you have I need to sort my own life out first, and theres not a penny spare for you. So, I wore that dreadful outfit all through Year Six, patiently enduring the whispers and sideways glances.

Later, a neighbour kindly gave me her daughters old uniform when she left school, and I wore that right up to my final exams. As for shoes, I managed with whatever I could find, making do until my toes grew too cramped to ignore. Eventually, I graduated from secondary school with good marks and chose to study economics at university. Even there, my wardrobe was a mishmash of hand-me-downs from friends whod grown tired of their clothes.

One day, I met Thomas, who had graduated a few years before. We started seeing each other, and in time he introduced me to his parents. The first time I visited, I felt so self-conscious about my battered old shoes; my feet were wet from the rain, but his mother pretended not to notice. The next day, she invited me over again and, much to my surprise, gifted me a new pair of shoes.

Id worried that Thomass parents wouldnt approve of me. But before long, they made me feel right at homeas if I were family already. I cant think what I ever did to deserve such kindness. For our wedding, they gave us a house as a gift, and after I graduated, my mother-in-law offered me a job at her company where I earned a very decent wage. At last, I was able to buy the things I needed, and I will always be grateful for that second chance life gave me.

When my mother learned of my marriage, my good job, and my own home, she came round quickly, asking for money. But my stepmother overheard our conversation and immediately called for my husband and our son to come home. In the end, my husband explained to my mother that she mustnt expect anything from me anymore. He said, kindly but firmly, that he was grateful she had a daughter, but she must never come to our home again. Since then, my mother has not contacted me, and now, I look forward to the arrival of my own child with hope.

Looking back, I realise that family isnt just about blood, but about kindness and support. Sometimes, its those who choose to stand by us who truly become our home.
