Who Do You Think You Are to Be Giving Orders?!

Last summer, our son went off to spend the holidays with his grandmother. He had been counting down the days for ages, so he packed his suitcase days in advance and disappeared, looking absolutely thrilled about having no set return date.

Gran really doted on him. She made sure he was the centre of attention and basically let him do whatever he fancied. When Oliver arrived at the cottage in Suffolk, he felt completely liberated it was exactly the summer freedom hed longed for. Every summer, he looked forward to these visits to Grans. At home, theres always someone keeping tabs on him, but at Grans, anything goes or so he thought. This time, things didnt turn out quite how hed imagined.

At the same time Oliver arrived, Grans other daughter my sister Emily happened to be staying at the cottage too. Emilys job takes her all over the country, so shes hardly ever around, but she does spend stints at Grans when she can. Shes unmarried and her visits are few and far between. Most of the time, Oliver and Emily only see each other over video calls. Hes so used to it just being Gran and Grandpa in the house, he never really saw Emily as an authority figure. She was more like a magical auntie who visited now and then and always brought little gifts, almost like a fairy godmother.

However, being under the same roof for a few days changed things quickly. Emily started picking him up on all sorts slamming doors, leaving his clothes in a heap, spending endless hours scrolling on his phone. Suddenly, there was someone following his every move. Naturally, Oliver was fed up. He came to Gran and said, Gran, Aunt Emilys so strict! Is she going home soon?

Gran explained that his aunt wasnt being harsh, just looking out for him in her own way, and he ought to show her some respect. Of course, Oliver insisted that only grandparents should be the ones making the rules, not an auntie whos barely around. When Emily made another comment about his messy trainers, he even summoned up the courage to tell her off, saying, Youre not in charge here. Its Gran and Grandpas house, so theyre the boss, not you.

Emily just gave him a little smile and tried to explain that she lived there some of the time too, so she had every right to say something. After this, Oliver decided it would be best to apologise, and from then on they seemed to get along just fine. I suppose it changed the way he sees things. All he wanted was a bit of a break, to escape the rules for a while, but instead, he ended up with someone new telling him what to do not much different from home, really.

We still laugh about it now, and we keep telling Emily she ought to come around more often.
