My son is nine years old. Hes a cheerful and easy-going boy. Recently, my sister had a wedding. On the invitations, she clearly stated the event would be child-free. I didnt agree with this idea, but I wanted to respect her wishes, so I arranged for a friend to look after my son on the day of the wedding.
But the night before the wedding, my friend called to say she was unwell. She was apologetic, though it wasnt really her fault. I reassured her and found myself sitting in the kitchen, thinking. My son was already asleep and the wedding was set for the morning. I wasnt sure what to do. In the end, I decided to bring my son along to the reception. After all, would my sister really turn away her own nephew?
My brother-in-law is quite wealthy, so the wedding was expected to be extravagant. My sister was nervous before the big day, so I didnt warn her in advance about bringing my son. The moment she saw him, her expression changed instantly. She became furious and started shouting:
Why did you bring your son to the wedding? We didnt invite children! Youve ruined everything!
I was terribly embarrassed. My son stood there, bewildered by the whole situation. Honestly, why make such a fuss? But that was just the beginning.
Let her bring her child. It’s her business where she takes him, my brother-in-law said.
I was taken aback. My sister didnt even want to hear my explanation. I tried to reason with her, but it was pointless.
In the end, I lost my temper, took my son, and left for home. My parents stayed at the wedding, though they werent really in the mood to celebrate after all that. The atmosphere had been spoiled.
Now, my sister is upset with me and expects me to apologise. I dont think Im to blame. Her behaviour wasnt exactly commendable, especially since shes about to become a mother herself. Should I apologise to her, or not? What would you do in my place?
