Today, I witnessed the actions of a 25-year-old bus driver from the local coach company. Heres what happened.
At one of the stops, an elderly lady of about eighty boarded the bus. I watched the scene unfold as she carefully pulled out a handkerchief (which, as it turned out, held her money), counted out the exact fare, and asked the driver if he could stop at the next stop by the grocers. He nodded, as usual; the old lady held out her payment and said,
Thank you, my dear.
But the driver didnt take her money! Instead, he pulled out his wallet and told everyone hed be back in a few minutes. He hurried into the shop and returned with four pints of milk, a loaf of bread, some pasta, cream, and a pack of meat. He handed the groceries to the elderly lady. She tried to refuse, saying,
No need, my pension covers my food and bits and bobs.
But the young man replied firmly,
If you dont take them, Ill have no choice but to throw them away.
Moved nearly to tears, the old lady thanked him and wished him all the best in life. The driver got back behind the wheel. At that moment, a woman in her forties spoke up:
Was it really worth the money and the delay just for a few words of thanks?
The young man turned, opened the doors, and asked her to step off with the words,
Its because of people like you that the elderly think all young folks have no mannerssince you teach your children nothing but greed and hypocrisy!
The woman left looking as red as a beetroot! Well done, ladwe need more people in the world like you.
And you know, the whole journey reminded me that kindness costs nothing, but its value is immense. Sometimes the simplest acts of generosity can restore someones faith in the next generation.
