**Diary Entry**
*Your son is so dullnothing good will ever come of him!*
Emily froze in the doorway, nearly dropping the cake shed brought. Her mother glared at her as if shed done something wrong.
Mum, whats this about? Emily set the cake on the table. Why bring up Jack?
Because hes in Year 7 and still at a regular comprehensive! Mum raised her voice. No specialisations, no advanced programmes. Hows he supposed to get into a decent university? Hows he meant to achieve anything?
Emily bit her lip. This was the same old argument, and a hot sting of unfairness flared in her chest.
Mum, Jacks doing well. He gets top marks in most subjects. Hes got a maths tutor and wants to go into programming, like his dad.
Exactly! Mum threw her hands up. Programming! Sitting at a computer all day, just like your Tom. A regular job, a regular salary. And what about you? A teacher, a tutorbarely making ends meet. Do you even feed that boy properly?
Emily clenched her fists. Every word landed like a blow. Yes, she and Tom werent rolling in moneythey had to budget carefully. But their son Jack was happy.
Were fine. Jacks happy.
Happy! Mum scoffed and turned to the window. Now, your brother Richards boythats a proper gem. Oliver goes to a grammar school with an advanced English programme. ImagineEnglish from Year 1! Fluent already. Richard and Helen are doing it rightinvesting in their child, no expense spared.
Emily stayed silent. Richard had always been the favourite. Ran a small business, bought a bigger house, while Helen stayed home with their son. And Mum never missed a chance to compare.
Olivers so gifted! Mum went on warmly. That boys going places. Richard says theyre sending him abroad for language immersion. At thirteen! Now thats planning for the future. Not this mediocre comprehensive nonsense.
Emily stepped closer. Her mothers shoulders were stiff, her face stern.
Mum, I know you want the best for your grandsons. But Jack isnt worse than Oliver. Theyre just different.
Different! Mum spun around. One path leads upto success. The other to a life of drudgery and struggle. Is that what you want for your son? For him to scrape by?
Something twisted inside Emily.
Mum, were not struggling. We live within our means. And Jack will grow into a good manclever, kind, hardworking.
Hardworking! Mum snorted. Thats not enough in this world, love. You need connections, money, a prestigious education. What does Jack have? A bog-standard school and a mum whos barely making rent.
Emily looked away. The cake shed baked with love, decorated with berries, now felt pointless.
Mum, I dont want to argue. Were raising Jack how we see fit. And hes happy.
His future is what matters! Mum stepped closer. Youre failing him with this complacency. Richard gets it. Hes making sure Oliver becomes someone. You? Youre just drifting.
Emily shook her head. Arguing was useless. Mum would never budge.
Fine. Lets just have lunch. Tom and Jack will be home soon.
Lunch was as tense as expected. Mum raved about Olivers achievements, how proud Richard was. Jack ate quietly, glancing at Emily. She smiled back, willing him to see she was okay.
After that day, Emily knew shed have to limit contact. The constant comparisons hurt too much. She called for birthdays and holidays but stopped hosting family gatherings. Mum sulked, but Emily held firm. She had to protect her son.
Years passed. Jack grew up, studied, loved coding. Occasionally, Mum shared updates about Richard. Oliver got top GCSEs, got into a Russell Group unithough not without his dads connections.
Jack went to a polytechnic, got in on merit. By his third year, he was working at a small IT firm. Emily was proud. Tom was proud. Mum still only talked about Oliver.
Another decade slipped by. At Mums 70th, the family gathered. Richard and Helen came. Oliver tootall, handsome, with artfully messy hair. Hed quit his job after uni to start a band. Richard bankrolled the gear. Two years on, theyd gone nowhere. Oliver still lived at home, unemployed.
Emily watched Mum dote on himhugging him, fussing over his music. Oliver yawned, scrolling on his phone, but Mum didnt notice. To her, hed always be golden.
Jack sat with his wife, Alice, newly pregnant. He worked at a top tech firm, earned well, rented a flat, saved for a house. But Gran barely looked his way.
Toms jaw was tight. Alice shot Jack anxious glances. But Jack just smiled, squeezing her hand.
The evening dragged. Mum boasted about Olivers inevitable fame. Oliver smirked. Emily stayed quiet.
Finally, it ended. Tom, Jack, and Alice left first, waiting by the car. As Emily wrapped her scarf, Mum stopped her.
Emily, wait. I need to say something.
Emily stilled. Mum spoke softly but firmly.
Your Jacks so dull, love. Grey, ordinary. Like you and Tom. No spark. Now Oliverhes a star. A genius. Hell show them all one day. But your boy? Just plods along. Works, married, a baby coming. Nothing special. Hes like millions of others.
Something inside Emily shattered.
She exhaled slowly, meeting Mums eyes.
You know, I used to think you just wanted me to be a better mother. That you pushed me out of love. But its simpler than that. You never loved my son. All these years, picking him apart, praising Oliverit wasnt about making Jack better. It was about making sure I knew hed never measure up.
Mum paled. Emily buttoned her coat calmly.
But heres the truth. My son is brilliantkind, hardworking, decent. Hell be a wonderful father. Because I never let him feel your disdain. I shielded him from your poison. And I made sure he grew up happy.
Mum stared, silent.
Keep your opinions about us to yourself. Im done begging for your love. Ive wasted too many years trying to earn it. Now? Ive got a grandchild coming. And Ill love that baby the way a grandmother should.
Emily walked out. Downstairs, Tom hugged her. Jack grinned. She sank into the car seat, an odd calm settling over her. Like a weight had lifted. No more pretending. No more proving.
It took years, but she was freefrom her mothers judgement, from the need to please. She had everything that mattered. A real family. And really, what more does a person need?
*Lesson learned: Love isnt earned. Its given. And sometimes, the healthiest thing you can do is walk away from those who refuse to give it.*
