He came and told his father directly that he should prepare to go to a nursing home tomorrow – without any other words, without a trace of sadness on his face, without the word “sorry”, without any explanations.

There were constant quarrels in the house: who would feed the grandfather, who would change his clothes and put him to bed. But it was not always like that. Earlier his children were dependent on Kevin – he provided them with money and bought a house.

It so happened that in his 70s a man suffered a stroke. He did not get out of bed for a long time, but then his condition improved, and he was able to sit in a wheelchair. Kevin’s wife died a few years ago and he lived alone in his apartment. His only child, Matthew, took him in when the trouble happened.

Matthew wasn’t living alone in his apartment, which was once given to him by his father, but with his wife Betty and two daughters. At first, both the son and the daughter-in-law took care of his father, but when they persuaded him to sell his apartment and their own too, and bought a big house, their attitude changed. The old man was of no use, and no one needed him now.

Betty did not want to bring her wheelchaired father-in-law to the new house, because he would scratch the new floor there and slam the door with his wheelchair.

And one evening, after another quarrel between children, Kevin heard footsteps in his room. It was his son. He came and told his father directly that he should prepare to go to a nursing home tomorrow. Without any other words, without a trace of sadness on his face, without the word “sorry”. Without any explanations.

The man did not object and went to live in a public institution for the same lonely people as himself. He will not cry, he will not complain to anyone, he just wants to know the answer to the question “why?”, because he doesn’t have it… Kevin only knows that one day his son will regret such an inhuman act, but it will be too late.
